Where it makes sense
The BV500 Journey is a rigid food canister for backpacking routes where that exact model is accepted. Its usable volume gives room for a substantial food load, but your actual menu, packaging, trash, and other required scented items determine whether it is large enough. BearVault's trip-length suggestion is not a universal capacity guarantee. Yosemite's published allowed-container list includes the 500 model, which is a specific destination check rather than blanket permission everywhere. Rehearse both opening and closing the lid, and pack the full load before the trip. A canister is wildlife storage, not refrigeration or a guarantee that every bear interaction is prevented.
