Camping Towels and Wash Kits: Choose the Size Around the Job

Choose camping towels and a wash kit by coverage, bathroom access, drying space, and packing needs, with specific towel, soap-case, and wash-basin options.

By Camp Gear Atlas Editorial · September 14, 2026 · Research-based guidance

The useful answer

Choose a towel by its required coverage and the time available to dry it. A compact hand towel suits basic washing; a shower or changing routine may need a larger cloth. Keep personal washing, dishes, and tent condensation separate. A soap case and collapsible basin are useful only when they fit the facilities and routines at your campsite.

A towel has more than one possible job

List what the towel must do before comparing materials. Drying hands after a bathroom visit is different from drying a whole body, wrapping around the waist, or handling long hair. Small towels can complete a larger drying task in stages, but that may be uncomfortable for the intended user. If coverage is the purpose, dimensions matter more than the smallest packed bundle.

For a family kit, avoid counting one large towel as a shared solution without discussing how it will be used. Simultaneous shower trips and personal preferences can make separate towels the simpler choice. At the other extreme, carrying a bath towel for every brief handwash creates unnecessary laundry and bulk. Choose each cloth by its owner and job rather than by a rule that all camping towels must match.

Match the wash pouch to the bathroom route

A wash pouch should carry the items needed for one bathroom visit without exposing clean clothing to wet soap. Check whether the route is paved, how far it is, and whether hands will already be occupied by a mobility aid, a child, or a light. A system that requires balancing loose bottles and a towel is awkward even if every item individually packs small.

Separate the personal pouch from the container used for meals and dishes. Consider a place to set or hang the pouch at the actual facilities, but do not assume hooks or dry counters are present. If a person needs assistance, talk through the routine privately before the trip. The right organization is the one they can use comfortably, which may favor familiar containers over specialized accessories.

When the PackTowl Hand size makes sense

The PackTowl Personal Hand is a candidate when a compact drying cloth is enough. Its listed dimensions provide a useful comparison against a towel already in the house: fold a household towel to approximately that size and check the intended routine. This does not reproduce the fabric’s feel, but it reveals whether the coverage is obviously too small.

The Hand size is less suitable when the towel must serve as a changing wrap. It can also be the wrong compromise when several people need a cloth before any drying time is available. We have not timed its drying performance. Plan a drying location regardless of the material, and do not assume a damp cloth becomes dry inside a closed pouch simply because it is sold for camping.

A soap case solves containment, not sanitation rules

Matador’s FlatPak Travel Soap Bar Case is a specific option for a person who prefers bar soap and wants a flexible carrier. A plain rigid case may still be preferable when the user wants a container that stands open on a counter. Check the bar’s thickness with enough room left for the closure, and practice opening it with wet hands before deciding it is convenient.

Keep soap and other scented toiletries in the storage arrangement required by the destination when they are not in use. A tidy wash pouch does not make them acceptable tent contents in places that require separate storage. Likewise, a biodegradable label is not permission to wash in a stream. Use the facilities and disposal instructions provided by the campground; a natural water source is not a bathroom sink.

Keep a personal wash kit separate from the kitchen

If the campsite has a washroom, the personal kit may need only the towel, toiletries, clean clothing, and a way to carry them there. A shared handwashing point is a separate campsite setup. Decide whether one is needed before adding water carriers or a basin to every person’s pouch.

A basin used for dishes should remain distinct from personal washing and drinking-water containers. The Sea to Summit Kitchen Sink 10L needs at least 8L to stand independently, according to the manufacturer; it is not a low-water standing basin simply because it folds small. Choose a different suitable basin if that fill requirement conflicts with the water plan. Use the destination’s wash facilities and greywater instructions.

Build the return and drying routine

Assign a clean place to the dry towel and a temporary place to the damp one. If drying lines are allowed, keep them entirely out of travel routes and use permitted supports. A towel spread with air reaching its surfaces has a better chance to dry than a tightly rolled one. Humidity, shade, weather, and time all change the result, so keep drying expectations realistic.

At home, empty the wash pouch. Clean the towel according to its care label, rinse the soap carrier as needed, and dry both before repacking. Keep the used-towel carrier open and separate until it is dry too. If a towel repeatedly returns damp, first change the drying opportunity or carry arrangement; a different fabric cannot create the missing time or space.
