The useful answer
Count the actual heating tasks, rehearse representative meals outdoors with the approved equipment, and measure fuel use rather than relying on a universal meals-per-canister rule. Add a reserve suited to the uncertainty and trip plan. Manufacturer boil figures describe stated conditions; they are not a guarantee for your wind, water, cookware, or cooking style.

Count tasks instead of nights
A two-night trip can involve no cooking, two dinners, or repeated meals and hot drinks. Write each task separately: breakfast water, dinner water, a simmered meal, a shared drink, and any cleaning water you intend to heat. Record the required volume from the meal instructions instead of assuming every pouch uses the same amount. Include everyone who expects a hot drink.
The useful unit is a repeated cooking task with a known setup. A family pasta dinner is not equivalent to one small mug of water, and one long simmer is not equivalent to lighting the stove briefly. If the menu changes after estimating fuel, revise the estimate. Nights alone are too coarse a measure.
Run a representative outdoor rehearsal
Use the actual stove, approved fuel, intended cookware, and a typical portion. Follow the manual from assembly to shutdown, using the stove outdoors only and away from enclosed tents and vehicles. Choose a safe normal setting; do not deliberately expose the stove to hazardous wind or modify it to simulate extreme conditions. The goal is to learn ordinary consumption and the meal sequence.
Where weighing is appropriate, weigh the disconnected fuel container before and after the completed, cooled cooking session using a suitable scale. Follow the manual for disconnection and allow the equipment to return to a safe handling condition. The mass difference is fuel consumed in that session. Label the record with the task and conditions so it is not mistaken for a universal specification.
Keep the arithmetic transparent
Here is a hypothetical subtotal, not a suggested consumption rate: a rehearsal breakfast uses 8 g, dinner uses 12 g, and an extra hot drink uses 4 g. Repeating each task twice gives (8 × 2) + (12 × 2) + (4 × 2) = 48 g. Your own measured tasks may use very different amounts. Add a reserve appropriate to your trip separately, and determine usable remaining fuel using the exact container’s tare rather than treating total canister weight as fuel weight.
Separate this subtotal from the reserve. A reserve should cover uncertainty in conditions, meal changes, and the consequences of losing hot food. There is no single percentage that can guarantee every trip. If the estimate only barely fits one container, selecting more approved fuel or a simpler menu can be more sensible than assuming every task will match the best rehearsal.
Know what the scale does not tell you
A container's gross weight includes its packaging. The fuel quantity printed on the label is a separate value. If you use an empty-container reference for tracking partially used fuel, make sure it applies to that exact container model; manufacturing differences can make a borrowed tare value misleading. Do not infer remaining fuel from the feel of a canister alone when the trip depends on it.
Do not refill a disposable backpacking canister or transfer gas with an improvised adapter to create the quantity you want. Follow the fuel manufacturer's instructions and local disposal requirements. A partially used container may be useful for a short known task, but packing several near-empty containers also adds handling, bulk, and uncertainty.
Check the tasks the first estimate missed
Published boil times can describe a manufacturer's stated test, but they cannot tell you how long your meal will simmer or how many times you will reheat drinks. Keep the rehearsal record with the pot, water quantity, flame setting, and conditions used. Revise it when the menu or equipment changes.
Repeated reheating is easy to miss in planning. If one person boils water for a drink while others are still finding breakfast, the stove may be lit again unnecessarily. Agree on a meal sequence and measure water accurately. Efficiency improvements should come from organization and approved use, never from wrapping a canister, overheating fuel, or exceeding pot limits.
Make running out inconvenient rather than dangerous
A no-cook food option reduces dependence on perfect fuel estimates. It does not replace an appropriate reserve when the route requires cooking or a separate water plan. Consider the consequences of being unable to heat food, then decide whether the trip and equipment are appropriate for the group's experience. If snow melting or severe conditions are central, a beginner fuel estimate is not sufficient preparation.
After returning, record the remaining fuel and compare the estimate with actual use. Keep notes about unexpected drinks, unused ingredients, and cooking tasks that were skipped. Over several similar outings, this builds a useful personal planning record. It is more reliable than repeating an attractive number from someone else's different stove, fuel container, and menu.
