The useful answer
Look for where the water first appears. Widespread droplets on the inside of a cool fly can be condensation; a repeatable wet point at a seam or damaged panel suggests a localized leak. Water at the floor may come from runoff, an exposed groundsheet, or transferred moisture. Diagnose the pattern before choosing a repair.

A wet morning does not identify the cause
You wake to damp fabric, but that observation alone cannot tell you whether the tent failed. Moisture may have formed from humid air inside, entered at a damaged point, traveled underneath the floor, or arrived on clothing during the evening. Several causes can happen together, so begin with the first wet location rather than the largest puddle.
Before moving bedding, look at the fly's inner surface, the tent's upper seams, and the floor edges. Note whether there was rain overnight and whether the door was opened while the fly was wet. A quick photo can preserve the pattern before wiping changes it. This makes a later repair request more useful than a general report that the tent leaked.
Pattern one: many small droplets on the cool outer layer
MSR explains condensation as water vapor becoming liquid on a cooler surface. Sleeping occupants add moisture to the tent air, and the fly can become cool enough for droplets to form underneath. That can happen even when no rain falls. A broadly damp inner fly is therefore a different clue from one small damaged seam admitting water repeatedly.
Manage the tent as designed: use protected vents that suit the conditions, keep the fly properly pitched, and preserve separation from the inner. Do not seal every opening in an attempt to create a warmer airtight room. Wet clothing adds another moisture source, so store it outside the sleeping compartment when an appropriate protected location is available.
Condensation cannot always be eliminated. On a humid night, the reasonable goal may be controlling its effect on bedding and allowing the tent to dry afterward. Wiping a suitable surface gently or airing the fly when conditions permit can help with cleanup, but it does not replace the next night's ventilation and pitch decisions.
Pattern two: a wet point that returns to the same seam
A localized leak is more plausible when water consistently appears at the same stitch line, worn spot, or puncture during rain. Follow the trail upward or outward; water can run along fabric before dripping somewhere else. The place where a drop lands on a sleeping bag may not be the point where it entered.
Inspect that component after the tent is clean and dry. Look for visible damage, lifting seam tape, or a nearby attachment under unusual strain. Check that the fly was oriented correctly and that an inner clip, bag, or pad was not pulling fabric into contact. A setup fault may need correction before any adhesive makes sense.
If a repair is needed, identify the surface coating and use the manufacturer's recommended method. GEAR AID's WP and SIL products are intended for different coating families. The fact that a tent is made of nylon or polyester is not enough to choose between them; the coating on the repaired side matters.
Pattern three: water collects at the floor edge
Look outside before blaming a floor coating. Was the tent in a shallow depression? Did a groundsheet project beyond the protected floor? Was rainwater from the fly directed toward an edge? Did wet shoes sit on the floor or a bag press against the wall? The answer can reveal a route for water that has little to do with a pinhole.
A footprint should remain contained under the intended floor area. It protects against abrasion and dirt but does not make a poor drainage location suitable. Keep the next pitch on an appropriate existing site and do not dig a trench around the tent. If the available ground collects water, relocate within the rules or change the campsite plan.
Inspect floor damage separately after drying. A small puncture and a coating that is sticky or peeling across broad areas call for different next steps. A compatible patch may address localized damage; widespread deterioration deserves a discussion with the manufacturer about repair feasibility or component replacement.
Pattern four: damp bedding without a clear drip
A sleeping bag pressed against the inner can receive moisture by contact. A thick mattress may raise bedding into a wall that it cleared at floor level. In a crowded tent, someone turning over can push the inner toward the fly. Recreate the bed arrangement during the dry home pitch to see where contact happens.
Also check the entry routine. A wet jacket thrown over a pillow or a damp pack placed beside the bed can create a localized wet patch that looks mysterious by morning. Separate clean bedding from entry gear before drawing conclusions about the shelter's fabric.
Change one thing and document the result
Once the tent is dry, choose the most plausible cause and address it specifically. Correct a projecting footprint, improve the permitted vent arrangement, repair a verified defect with compatible materials, or adjust the beds. Avoid simultaneously spraying the fly, coating every seam, and changing the whole pitch; that makes it difficult to know which issue was real.
If the source remains uncertain, send the manufacturer the model year, photos of the first wet area, and a description of the weather and setup. A clear pattern is better evidence than the amount of water eventually collected. Diagnosis keeps a manageable moisture problem from turning into an unnecessary coating project.
