Ask who needs the car after breakfast
The first question is logistical, not technical. Will someone drive to a trailhead, collect supplies, or take a child elsewhere while the rest of the group stays at camp? If so, a shelter that depends on the car can interrupt the people who remain. A detached roof lets the campsite continue operating while the vehicle leaves.
If the car will stay parked for several days, the answer changes. Cover beside it may make retrieving equipment and organizing the day's activities convenient. Also consider the chosen parking position. If the shelter only works by parking outside the designated area or extending into the neighbor's space, it does not fit the campsite. A semi-universal attachment system cannot solve a site-layout mismatch.

For a vehicle attachment, agree who confirms that every connection is released before anyone drives. For detached cover, agree who checks or lowers it when the group leaves camp. Include that job in the normal departure routine; it is easy for the driver and the people staying behind to assume the other has dealt with a shared shelter.
