Sleeping Bag Length and Girth: A Fit Check Beyond Regular or Long

Measure sleeping-bag fit using user height, actual length, shoulder girth, foot room, and turning space so Regular, Long, and Wide mean something useful.

By Camp Gear Atlas Editorial · September 14, 2026 · Research-based guidance

The useful answer

Use the maker’s maximum user height to choose an initial length, then check shoulder, hip, and foot room in your real sleeping position. Bag length is not the same as maximum user height, and girth is circumference rather than flat width. A wider cut often solves tightness more directly than buying extra length.

Separate the four measurements that listings mix

A product page may show user height, external bag length, shoulder girth, and packed length close together. Only the first three concern the sleeping fit, and each describes something different. The storage sack’s dimensions tell you nothing about whether your feet will compress the end of the bag. A long external measurement may include a hood and shaped footbox beyond the space intended for the person.

Copy the labels with the numbers into your notes. Writing only “78 inches” loses the distinction you need. If a retailer and manufacturer use different descriptions, ask which measurement was taken before deciding that the product is unusually long or unusually short.

Use user height as the starting gate

The manufacturer’s stated fit height gets you to a sensible size to try. It is not an instruction to buy the longest bag you can afford. An adult well within a Regular size may gain little by moving to Long if the problem is around the shoulders. Conversely, someone near the stated height limit should pay close attention to relaxed feet, hood position, and any pressure at the end.

Lie down with your legs relaxed, then point and flex your feet gently. The aim is freedom to settle without forcing the shell tight. Do not conduct the test while carefully shortening your posture; that only proves you can make yourself fit temporarily.

Girth measures a loop, not a rectangle

Shoulder girth describes the distance around the bag at that point. It cannot be laid across the tent floor as if it were pad width. Even halving the number gives only a rough flat-fabric idea, because the bag’s construction and loft affect how usable room is distributed. Look at shoulder, hip, and foot measurements together, especially if your knees travel outward.

A helpful physical comparison is your existing bag. Identify where it binds and compare that area with the new candidate’s shape, rather than relying on body circumference alone. You need room for movement, clothing, and loft, not merely enough fabric to close a zipper around a stationary torso.

Run a five-minute fit rehearsal

Use the pad and pillow you expect to take. Wear representative sleep layers, close the bag normally, and turn both ways. Reach toward the zipper, bring your usual knee forward, and check whether the hood opening remains workable. Ask a companion to look for areas where the outer fabric becomes visibly taut, or use a mirror after sitting up to note where the bag is pulling.

Record the problem as a location and action: “right knee binds when forward” is more helpful than “too small.” That note can lead to a wider hip section or a contoured knee area instead of an unnecessary jump in overall length.

When two manufacturer entries disagree

The current Kelty Catena table contains a maximum-user-height entry that conflicts with its listed bag length. We do not resolve that by choosing whichever number supports a recommendation. Treat conflicting data as a question for the manufacturer or as a reason to try the actual item. A clear answer matters especially if you are close to the size boundary.

This approach applies to used bags as well. A model name without a readable size label is incomplete fit information. Ask for the label and measurements of the actual item, and check whether alterations, a replacement zipper, or a different production generation could explain the discrepancy.

Make a small fit worksheet

The worksheet does not need to predict comfort mathematically. Its purpose is to preserve the measurements and observations that matter while you compare bags in different stores or on different days. Put a question mark beside anything that came from a vague listing.

After a fit rehearsal, add one sentence describing the best and worst movement. This prevents a bag with an attractive weight from displacing another that demonstrably lets you rest in your preferred position.

Choose width deliberately and keep the size record

If a standard length works but the bag binds, compare Wide or another cut before selecting Long. Some manufacturers vary width with length; others offer width separately. Read the specific table rather than assuming the naming system is consistent across brands. The Boost range, for example, provides separate width choices alongside length choices.

Once a bag fits, save the model, size, and relevant dimensions with your equipment notes. That record is useful when you buy a pad, replace a storage sack, or share the bag with another adult. The goal is a repeatable fit reference, not a universal rule about what every person of your height should buy.
