The useful answer
R-value measures resistance to heat flow through a pad; a higher verified ASTM value indicates greater thermal resistance in the test. It is not a sleeping-bag temperature rating or a guaranteed minimum air temperature. Compare current models tested on the same basis, then consider fit, ground conditions, and the rest of your bedding.

What R-value measures and why the ASTM basis matters
A pad’s insulation number answers a specific comparison question: how much the mattress resists heat transfer through it under a defined method. It does not describe upper-body coverage, wind around the shelter, damp clothing, or whether your shoulder leaves the pad during a turn. Those factors belong to the complete setup rather than to the single R-value.
This distinction is useful when shopping. A higher figure can be a reason to prefer one pad for insulation, while the same pad may be the wrong width or an awkward size to carry. Keep a separate column for each job instead of asking one number to determine the whole purchase.
ASTM F3340 provides a standardized comparative measurement using a guarded hot-plate arrangement. The public scope explains that the test is controlled and that real use may involve additional heat losses, posture changes, or different compression. It also excludes removable auxiliary insulation from the mattress measurement.
For the buyer, the important step is finding evidence that the reported value uses the relevant ASTM method. An older in-house number, a retailer’s unexplained claim, or a temperature range cannot simply be dropped into the same comparison table. If the maker’s page is unclear, ask for the test basis rather than assuming that any number labeled R is equivalent.
Current verified examples in this collection
The examples below show the range of thermal resistance among several constructions. They are not a temperature chart and do not assign any pad a universal season. The values apply to the current manufacturer information researched for this collection; confirm the generation when a retailer offers an older version.
A larger R-value should be understood as more resistance in the standardized comparison. It does not establish whether you will like the mattress feel, whether two people can share it comfortably, or whether its packed roll fits your car.

Thickness and insulation can move independently
A deep air mattress may offer plenty of vertical space without the internal features needed for substantial thermal resistance. A relatively thin pad can contain effective insulating structure. That is why measuring the height with a ruler cannot replace the R-value. Look at depth when considering pressure-point clearance and tent height, then return to the verified insulation measurement.
The distinction also helps diagnose a purchase mistake. If the surface feels physically comfortable but you planned only from its thickness, recheck the insulation evidence. If insulation is documented but your hip reaches the ground, investigate fit, pressure, and cushioning rather than assuming the higher R-value should have prevented that contact.
Stacking pads is a system choice, not a new certification
Manufacturers describe placing a foam pad with another mattress as a way to add insulation. Nominal R-values can inform that plan, but the assembled arrangement is not automatically a newly tested product. Full overlap and staying on the supported area matter, as does preventing the pads from shifting apart.
Use stacking for a specific purpose: supplemental insulation, a protected surface, or a planned backup role. It adds carried bulk and can change the bed’s stability. Do not assume a thin foam layer alone will provide an adequate fallback in every condition simply because it was part of a warmer two-pad setup before the air pad developed a problem.
Use conditions to choose, rather than converting R into degrees
Your trip plan should identify plausible overnight conditions and the other equipment you will use. Then compare pads with that plan in mind, seeking manufacturer guidance where necessary. Avoid a rigid table that turns every R-value into one air-temperature cutoff. Such a shortcut hides variables and can look more precise than the evidence allows.
An adult who normally sleeps cold, a quilt setup with exposed edges, and a pad too narrow for the sleeper all call for attention beyond the number. Choose a suitable system and a practical fallback. A numerical comparison becomes most useful after the basic fit and camping conditions are clear.
Keep version differences out of your comparison
Retailer pages can retain familiar product names after construction or testing information changes. The current Comfort Deluxe page, for example, lists 7.7, so we do not combine that number with older model weights or dimensions from another listing. Record the exact product, size, source, and date together.
If you own an older pad, its usable condition and original specifications matter more than what a current model with a similar name now claims. Do not rewrite the label on your equipment based on a new product page. Identify the actual version, ask the maker when needed, and keep any uncertainty visible in your next trip plan.
