The useful answer
For car camping, start with the bed dimensions and the space available in your vehicle. Foam-filled self-inflating pads are useful candidates when cushioning matters more than low weight. Compare verified ASTM R-values separately from thickness, and try firmness while lying down. A mattress must also leave room to enter, exit, and use the tent.

Choose a solo mattress or a shared bed first
For one adult, BaseCamp Regular is the lower, narrower foam-filled option in this shortlist. For two adults sharing a bed, MegaMat Duo LW+ and Comfort Deluxe Double offer much larger surfaces. The doubles are alternatives for a pair, not the next size up every solo camper needs.
Make that choice before comparing cushioning. Separate pads allow independent firmness and can travel on solo trips. One double removes the seam between pads, while asking both adults to accept a common setting and pack one large roll.
Check the selected mattress against your existing tent with a route to the door. Then account for bed height: a deeper mattress lifts your head and shoulders toward the sloping walls. Check this with the bed inflated, or use a clean height mockup before purchasing.
Cushioning and insulation need separate decisions
Thickness describes the available depth; ASTM R-value describes resistance to heat flow under a standardized test. A high mattress can feel plush without having documented ground insulation, while a thinner pad can have substantial insulation. Look for both pieces of information and avoid choosing purely from photographs of a tall inflated bed.
The selected BaseCamp is two inches thick; the two shared mattresses here are four inches thick. Those dimensions help you plan clearance, but they do not prove how your hip or shoulder will feel. Try the actual construction with pressure adjusted to your body, and compare the verified R-value independently for your trip planning.
Self-inflating still includes a setup task
A foam-filled pad draws air as its foam expands, but the final firmness may need a top-up. Give it the time and process described by its maker, then adjust with the intended pump or valve. Buying the mattress does not remove the need to learn its inflation and deflation sequence.
For a multi-night camp, you may accept a slower first setup in return for keeping the bed assembled. On a road trip with a new campsite each evening, repeated packing effort may become more important. Think about how often you will compress the pad, how much space you have to roll it, and whether one adult can complete the process conveniently.
Use the packed shape, not just packed volume
A long cylinder, a short bulky roll, and a flat stack can occupy similar nominal volumes while fitting a car very differently. Measure the opening of your storage compartment and the length available between other gear. For a double mattress, also check whether the person carrying it can lift and maneuver the packed roll comfortably through the tent door or campsite approach.
Use the current version’s specifications. Comfort Deluxe generations can have different listed R-values, and MegaMat names and sizes are easy to confuse. Save the exact selected model with your packing plan so a last-minute retailer substitution does not unexpectedly change the load or bed footprint.
A pressure trial should include moving and getting up
Inflate as directed, lie down, and make small adjustments. Test your usual side and back positions. If a hip contacts the ground, the setting or pad may not be adequate for you; if the surface feels excessively hard, carefully reduce pressure within the maker’s guidance. Then sit up and practice getting out without assuming the pad will feel the same under a concentrated load.
For a shared mattress, both adults should be present. Evaluate whether one person’s movement changes the other’s experience enough to matter. That is a preference test, not a claim we can settle from a manufacturer photograph or a nominal thickness.
Price and pack the bed with its required accessories
Before ordering, put the mattress, its pump or inflation sack, repair materials, and any planned cot or topper on the same list. Check whether the supplied pieces already do the job before adding another pump. The roll dimensions must work in the loaded vehicle, and the inflation connection must remain reachable in the finished tent layout.
