Three pads create three different carrying compromises

The shortlist spans a narrow insulated air pad, a wider insulated air pad, and folding closed-cell foam. Start by ruling out anything that does not suit the trip’s insulation requirements or your sleeping position. Then compare the complete load and where it will fit on the pack.

A narrow air pad reduces the carried package only if it supports you when you turn. Foam removes the inflation task but occupies a broad folded stack. These are concrete choices to rehearse with the loaded backpack; a general base-weight target cannot decide them.

Three different reasons to make the shortlist

This list deliberately includes a design with very different cushioning. Foam is not a lesser air pad; it removes inflation and puncture-related loss of support by using a different construction. Its lower insulation figure and thin profile still need to suit the plan, so simplicity alone does not make it the right stand-alone option.

A 20-inch pad needs a real fit test

Narrow pads can work well for adults who remain centered, but shoulder width alone does not determine the result. Elbows, knees, and a turning body can cross the edge. Try the pad with the bag or quilt you use, because that upper covering may either restrain your movement or allow you to spread out.

Compare a wider version in the same sleep position if possible. Do not assume you need extra length at the same time. Width and length solve different problems, and increasing both may add weight and crowd the tent unnecessarily. Record what leaves the pad so you can choose the right dimension to change.

Insulation comes from a verified comparison

Look for an ASTM-based R-value on the current product information. An unexplained “warm to” temperature is not a replacement for that measure. The three pads here span different insulation values, making it essential to select for conditions rather than assuming every item in a backpacking collection serves the same season.

Avoid defining one universal “three-season” requirement. A low-elevation warm-weather outing and an exposed high campsite in the same month can present different demands. Keep the expected conditions and your other bedding in view, and use the R-value to compare resistance to ground heat loss rather than to generate a promised air-temperature limit.

Count the small pieces and the packing shape

Inflatable pads may travel with a pump sack, stuff sack, repair patches, and straps. Decide which supplied pieces you will carry, then use that complete amount in the kit-weight tool. If a manufacturer lists only pad weight, do not silently call it packed weight. Tensor All-Season Regular Wide is 530 g for the pad and 620 g packed with the supplied accessories. Its 72-by-25-inch footprint also needs five more inches of tent width than a 20-inch mat.

A folding foam pad usually occupies a broad stack and may need to ride outside the pack. Check that its attachment is secure and that it does not obstruct access to other equipment or snag as you move. A light item can still be awkward if its shape does not work with your pack.

Learn inflation and repair before departure

Practice the valve sequence and learn how to make small firmness adjustments while lying down. Carry the repair material suited to the pad, know where it is packed, and read its instructions before the first trip. A patch you cannot identify in the dark is less useful than one kept with a simple printed or saved reference.

Do not assume that every leak has an immediate field fix. A spare foam mat may serve a supplementary role, but whether it provides an adequate fallback depends on the trip. Choose a route and conditions that match the consequences of equipment trouble rather than treating a tiny repair kit as a guarantee.

Compare comfort after the mattress is adjusted

A fully firm pad in a shop may feel different from the setting you prefer overnight. Test pressure carefully and check for ground contact beneath your hip or shoulder. Use the same pillow when comparing pads at first, then adjust pillow height after selecting the mattress; otherwise two changing components can confuse the result.
