The useful answer
When choosing a tent for existing beds, keep the pad dimensions fixed and compare candidate floor plans. Add widths, check length and taper, and draw the remaining space beside the actual doors. The worked examples below eliminate impossible layouts; a pitched-tent trial checks wall clearance and movement that the drawing cannot establish.
Keep the beds fixed while comparing tents
Write down the inflated length, width, and outline of every pad the group will bring. Use those same beds in each candidate tent drawing. Otherwise a tent can appear to gain room simply because its illustration uses narrower bedding than yours. If you are still choosing pad dimensions for an existing tent, settle that choice before treating the following calculations as your final layout.
Measure at normal sleeping inflation, including raised side rails. Note where pillows and sleeping bags extend beyond the pad. A rectangular pad stays wide at the foot; a mummy pad narrows. The examples below use rectangles deliberately, so their arithmetic should not be transferred unchanged to a different shape.
Example one: two wide pads on a rectangular floor
Two pads that are each 25 inches wide total 50 inches. In a tent with a published 52-inch rectangular floor width, the nominal remainder is two inches. That is one inch at each side if centered, before accounting for bedding or a wall that curves inward above the floor.
The current MSR Elixir 2 provides this useful paper example because its manufacturer floor specification is 84 by 52 inches. If the pads are 78 inches long, six nominal inches remain lengthwise. Those remainders describe the drawing only. They do not establish that a tall camper's sleeping bag will clear the end wall when used on a thick pad.
Example two: why three wide pads can fail
Three 25-inch rectangular pads total 75 inches. They cannot lie flat side by side inside a 70-inch-wide rectangle without overlap or deformation. The current Elixir 3's published width is 70 inches. Three 20-inch pads total 60 inches instead, leaving ten nominal inches to distribute.
This does not make the three-person label misleading by itself. It shows that the sleeping equipment is part of capacity. A mixture of widths can work differently again: two 25-inch pads and one 20-inch pad total 70 inches exactly. Exact equality is a tight planning result, not spare room. Try the whole arrangement before depending on it.
Example three: rotate a family layout
Consider four pads, each 25 by 78 inches, and a floor drawn as 100 by 120 inches. Laying the pad widths across 120 inches uses 100 inches and leaves 20 nominal inches. Their 78-inch length uses part of the 100-inch direction, leaving 22 nominal inches at the ends. Rotating the arrangement uses all 100 inches of the other direction for pad widths.
The 100-by-120-inch dimensions correspond to NEMO's documented Highrise 6P floor. The arithmetic demonstrates why rotation matters, but the preferred orientation depends on the actual doors and walls. The unused space may form a useful route at one end, a narrow strip at each side, or several disconnected corners. Equal unused area does not mean equal usefulness.
Taper requires more than one width
For a tapered floor, a single maximum width can hide a problem at the foot. Record both the head-end and foot-end widths, plus any narrowing between them. Rectangular pads have to fit the narrow portion for the distance they occupy. Two pads that fit at the doors may push against the lower end of the inner.
A manufacturer's diagram is helpful, but a photograph taken with a wide lens can make the corners look more generous than they feel. If the narrow-end measurement is unavailable, ask for it or inspect a pitched sample. Do not use floor area divided by pad area as proof of fit; area calculations cannot tell whether the shapes can be arranged without overlap.
Mattress thickness moves the test upward
Floor dimensions are measured at the ground. A thick airbed or cot raises a sleeping body toward the sloping walls, where the tent can be narrower. Tall bedding can therefore brush the inner even when its base fits easily. Sitting on the bed raises a person's head still farther toward the roof.
This is why a tent-fit calculation should be treated as an early filter. Use it to reject impossible layouts and compare options, then check the promising arrangement physically. Avoid pressing the inner against the fly with an oversized mattress; preserving the intended separation is part of the tent's moisture-management design.
Compare what the leftover space can actually do
Mark the doors on each drawing and trace a route from every bed to an exit. A strip at the foot may provide access; the same area split into narrow gaps beside four pads may provide none. Add the clothing and headlamps needed overnight. Compare the candidates with those items in the same positions wherever the doors allow.
Use a tent-fit calculation to reject impossible rectangles, then carry the most promising sketch into a full practice pitch. Check bedding clearance at its actual height and try the exit while other people remain lying down. Save the successful orientation with the pad dimensions so the next trip starts from a layout you have checked.
